  • Thus, it is vital that Anti-Asian racism strategies are included within national contexts in order to mitigate this public health crisis. From a public health perspective, the mass amounts of hatred in a population can impact the Asian-Canadian community individually, culturally and structurally (Abuelaish and Arya, 2017). With the increasing rise of such incidents, hate speech alone is known to lead to an increase in clinical anxiety levels (Abuelaish and Arya, 2017). It is also important to note that such statistics represent reported cases and may underestimate the actual number of Anti-Asian racist incidents across Canada. A harmonized national public health data collection mechanism is important to adequately track disease outbreaks and monitor immunity. The COVID-19 pandemic has abetted the need for an interoperable, innovative national system to collect public health data nationally. Harmonized, national public health data collection is needed to measure the impact and effectiveness of, for example, an intervention. Unfortunately, Canada lacks a robust, national public health surveillance and data collection system and strategy. Data helps paint a comprehensive story and allows a nation to deliver better health outcomes and reduce health inequities.
